Earth Space

  • AstroWeb
Maintained by the AstroWeb Consortium, this site contains pointers to publications, people, organizations, software and more -- all related to astronomy.

Color Landform Atlas of the United States
Each state link brings up a menu of links to maps and other online information about the state. Links are included for web pages from the Virtual Tourist, City Net, and YaHoo. Currently two maps are available for each state (except Alaska and Hawaii): A topographic map optimized to show the landforms, and a map showing counties in a state.

    Earth Observatory
NASA's Webby award winning Earth Observatory is a freely-accessible Web site where the public can obtain new satellite imagery and scientific information about our home planet. The focus is on Earth's climate and environmental change.

    Exploring the Environment®
Twenty-five online modules put students in problem-based learning scenarios. In one module, students predict the impact of increased carbon dioxide on the wheat yield in Kansas. In another, they predict weather 48 hours in advance. Topics include coral reefs, climate change, the Everglades, mountain gorillas, rainforests, volcanoes, water quality, and ozone depletion. (A NASA-sponsored project.)

    Home Planet
Release 3.1 of Home Planet is a "comprehensive astronomy, space, satellite-tracking package for Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0 and above. Release 2 can be used with Windows 3.1. This FREE software allows you to view an earth map, position and phase data for the sun and moon and more. If you are a Windows user, check it out!.

    Hubble Newscenter
Check out astronomical events present and past and view images captured by the Hubble Space telescope. Be sure not to miss the Amazing Space section designed for students, teachers and others who want to learn about the wonders of our universe'. There is a special section for teachers and developers.

    NASA's Mars Pathfinder Mission
Follow the progress of the Mars Pathfinder probe launched on December 4, 1996 carrying a microrover (Sojouner) designed to examine the surface of Mars. The website is separated into two parts reflecting the state of the mission before and after the July 4, 1997 landing.

National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)
Start here to find education resources from NASA, search all of NASA, find current events related to NASA and space science and much more!

    The Nine (now 8) Planets
One star, eight planets, and more, this site is loaded with interesting information, including history, current theories, mythology, and data gathered by spacecraft. The site is well-organized, easy to navigate, and includes images, animation and sound files, and a glossary of terms. This is an excellent resource for everything from general statistical research to casual browsing.

    PlanetDiary
Very cool...especially the "Phenomena Backgrounders" which have interesting activities for the classroom and a well compiled set of links for each phenomenon.

    Science for Everyone: Atmospheric Sciences
Sections of this site include: Climate and Global Change, Hydrologic Sciences, Ocean Sciences, Planetary Sciences, Solid Earth Sciences, and Space Sciences.

    SpaceWeather.com
The Space Weather Bureau forecasts based in part on data from NASA and NOAA satellites and ground-monitoring stations, include steroid alerts, reports on geomagnetic activity, and more. Teachers will find the space weather tutorial and lesson plans (2nd-4th, and 5th -8th grades) especially useful.

    Stanford Solar Center
Designed for grades 4-12, the site offers a activities, quizzes and more, in its hands-on approach to exploring the Sun. Data is provided by the SOHO spacecraft and, particularly, the MDI instrument from the Solar Oscillations Investigation team.

    Twelve Soil Orders: Soil Taxonomy
Created by soil scientist Paul McDaniel of the University of Idaho, Moscow, this site describes the formation, composition, and ecological importance of each of the 12 soil orders--information used by everyone from agronomists to civil engineers.

    Universe Today
Space news from around the Internet, updated every weekday.

U.S. Global Change Research Information Office(GCDIS) This continuously-updated catalog provides a comprehensive list of global change-related data sets made available from federal agencies. Ask Dr. Global Change are there to assist if you need help finding what you are looking for.

    Views of the Solar System
Views of the Solar System has been created as an educational tour of the solar system. It contains images and information about the Sun, planets, moons, asteroids, comets and meteoroids found within the solar system. It contains over 220 pages of information, over 950 high-resolution images and animations, and over 880 megabytes of data.....Whew! (Calvin J. Hamilton)

    Virtual Earthquake
One of a series of online labs written at the high school AP or college level, Virtual Earthquake is an interactive computer program designed to introduce the concepts of how an earthquake EPICENTER is located and how the RICHTER MAGNITUDE of an earthquake is determined. (CSU and NASA)

    Volcanos of the World
All you ever wanted to know about volcanos including photos (including links to many live onsite cameras), information on eruption history and current hazard information. (USGS)

    Water on the Web
These water science units and tools help students understand and solve real environmental problems using advanced technology as they learn about aquatic ecology, water quality, and watersheds. Students see maps, summaries, and information on lakes and rivers nationwide, and use data visualization tools to watch data change through time and explore relationships among variables. (University of Minnesota / Sponsored by the National Science Foundation)
